Designing Your System

When choosing the right system for your off-grid home, there are many factors to keep in mind. How much energy do you need for your family? How many solar panels and batteries will you need to create an uninterrupted energy supply? Which companies provide the best equipment and materials?

To get started, figure out how much energy your family currently uses. To find this, take an average of your current electrical bills and divide this by 30. This will give you an idea of your average daily use. Once you have this number, you can build your system around your needs. For our home, we chose the GSLC inverter made by Outback, connected to 18 Q Cell 340-watt solar panels. The electricity generated during the day is stored in 4 PHI3.8 48v lithium batteries. This system is small but effective, generating enough energy to run our 1488-square-foot home and supply uninterrupted power for our family.
